INFO ABOUT THE PROVINCE (prepared by Natalie Adele Erikkilä, based on statistics and the study of the province):

Kymenlaakso (Swedish: Kymmenedalen) - a province in south-eastern Finland. The province is named after the river Kymijoki that runs through the province. The population of the province of Kymenlaakso is 182.575 people (28.02.2010 estimate).

The province is divided into two sub-provinces: the Kouvola region and the Kotka-Hamina region.

I. Subprovince THE KOUVOLA REGION has a population of 95.224 people (31/03/2010 estimate):

• IITTI (Swedish: Itis), the municipality/countryside:
- Distance from Iitti: to the center of Kouvola - 21 km (23 min.), to Lahti, 40 km (40 min.), to Helsinki, 140 km (1 h 40 min.);
- Population of 7.075 people (31.03.2010 estimate): 98.8% Finns (6.968 people), 0.3% Swedes (24 people), 0.8% other (67 people, inc. 50 who are citizens of other countries);
- Transportation: bus, train station Kausala;
- Municipal tax 18,5%;
- Nature: water (lakes, ponds, rivers) 97.28 km².
There are many forested areas and hills in the north of Iitti, there are three large lakes formed by tributaries of the Kymijoki river: Urajärvi, Leininselkä, Iso Valkijärvi on the border of Kouvola with Iitti. In the south of Iitti there is only one lake Sääskijärvi, but there is also a river Taasianjoki and numerous small ditches, which make the landscape beautiful even in the winter. South east Finland is known for it's indegenous rocks.In north and west Iitti, granite rocks are indegenous to the geological landscape while rapakivi rocks are indegenous to south and east Iitti. These two rock types form a sightful geological feature in the village of Lujottilä in the area of Rauhamäki, where they can be seen together as two distinct adjacent layers of rock.

• KOUVOLA, the city:
The city includes 6 main areas: Kouvola, Anjalankoski (25 km from the center of Kouvola), Elimäki (27 km from the center of Kouvola), Valkeala (12 km from the center of Kouvola), Jaala (33 km from the center of Kouvola), Kuusankoski (7 km from the center of Kouvola);
- Distance to the center of Kouvola: from Helsinki - 138 km (1 h 45 min.);
- Population of 88.149 people (31.03.2010 estimate): 98.8% Finns (85.518 people), 0.3% Swedes (317 people), 0.8% other (2.337 people, inc. 1.757 are citizens of other countries);
- Transportation: Bus, central railway station in Kouvola and railway station in Myllykoski; train from Kouvola to Helsinki takes 1 h 23 min, to Viborg 1 h 15 min., to St. Petersburg 4 hours and 15 minutes. To the airport Helsinki / Vantaa 130 km. Kouvola city is the first station stop on the territory of Finland for the trains from Moscow/St. Petersburg. At the end of 2010, fast trains between St. Petersburg - Helsinki will be introduced, with a stop in Kouvola city (the departure point for Finnish border officials);
- Municipal tax 19%;
- Nature: water (lakes, ponds, rivers) 325.23 km².
The northern side of Kouvola has a lot of forests, hills and large lakes, and the famous Repovesi National Park. The southern side in sharp contrast, is flat, with not many lakes and has large areas of plantation fields. The flow of the river Kymijoki starts from a large lake Pyhäjärvi (the second largest lake in the province), located in the north of the city. The flow of the river Kymijoki, passes through different areas of the city down to the south, continuing through Myllykoski and Anjalankoski areas, turns to the west and after a short distance, splits into two tributaries, one of which continues to the south of Kotka, flowing into the sea Gulf of Finland, while the another continues to the west in Harjunkylä, flows into the lake, which has a flow into the sea Gulf of Finland. The largest lake Vuohijärvi in Kouvola is located in the north of the city.

II. Subprovince THE KOTKA-HAMINA REGION has a population of 87.357 people (31.03.2010):

• HAMINA (Swedish: Fredrikshamn), the city:
- Distance from the center of Hamina: to Helsinki 146 km (1 h 45 min.);
- Population of 21.493 people, 96.1% Finns (20.592 people), 0.4% of Swedes (73 persons), 3.5% other (818 people, inc. 596 are citizens of other countries);
- Transportation: bus to the railway station in Kotka 26 km, to the airport in Lapeenrante 87 km, to Helsinki-Vantaa airport 153 km;
- Municipal tax 20%;
- Nature: water in the land (lakes, ponds, rivers) 23.18 km², the sea 522.49 km².
Hamina is a city of the southern coast and the eastern agricultural area. The rocks consist mainly of famous rapakivi. There are two rivers Summanjoki and Vehkajoki that flow through the city and pours into the Finnish Gulf. The land around the river is used for agriculture. Four small lakes are located in the north and north-east side: Kannusjärvi, Piutulanjärvi, Valkjärvi and Vehkjärvi. There is only one lake Kirkkojärvi close to the coast. The lake formed from the Gulf of Finland. The center of Hamina is located on a cape between the Gulf of Hamina (Haminalahti), the Gulf of Lupi (Lupinlahti), the lake Kirkkojärvi and the Gulf of Salmi (Salminlahti) on the border with the Kotka city. The last three are known as bird water areas.

• KOTKA (Kotka), the city:
- Distance from the center of Kotka: to Helsinki 133 km (1 h 40 min.);
- Population of 54.769 people, 94.4% of Finns (51.335 people), 1% of the Swedes (567 people), 4.5% other (2.872 people inc. 2.390 are citizens of other countries);
- Transportation: bus, train station, seaport, airport Kymi for small planes;
- Municipal tax 19,5%;
- Nature: water in the land (lakes, ponds, rivers) 5,76 km², the sea 672.69 km².
City is located on the large island in the Gulf of Finland with numerous islands and tributaries of the river Kymijoki, flowing into the bay. River Kymijoki in Kotka has several waterfalls: Pernoonkosket, Langinkoski, Siikakoski and Kultaankosket.
Kotka has only two small lakes, with a diameter of 1 km, and several small ponds, with a diameter of 300 m. The highest point in Kotka is Suurivuori, close to Hamina and it is about 87 m above the sea level, other points: the airport Kymi is about 72 m and Haukkavuori in Pernoo is 69,1 m. The most common rock is rapakivi. The river Kymijoki and the river Nummenjoki contain clay soil.

• MIEHIKKÄLÄ, the municipality/countryside:
- Distance from the center Miehikkälä: to Helsinki 186 km (2 h 20 min.);
- Population of 2.249 people, 96.2% of Finns (2.185 people), 0.2% Swedes (3 people), 3.6% other (90 people inc. 68 are citizens of other countries);
- Transportation: bus;
- Municipal tax 19,5%;
- Nature: water in the land (lakes, ponds, rivers) 18,19 km².
In Miehikkälä there are three rivers that flow into the Gulf of Finland. They are Virojoki in the west side, Vaalimaanjoki in the middle of Miehikkälä and Urpalanjoki on the east side. The biggest lakes are Suurijärvi and Tyllinjärvi.

• PYHTÄLÄ (Swedish: Pyttis), the municipality/countryside:
- Distance from the center Pyhtää: to Helsinki 117 km (1 h 21 min.);
- Population of 5.311 people, 88.3% Finns (4.716 people), 9.6% Swedes (481 people), 2.1% other (119 people inc. 92 are citizens of other countries); < br> - Transportation: Bus;
- Municipal tax 19,75%;
- Nature: water in the land (lakes, ponds, rivers) 11.66 km², the sea 444.58 km².
Pyhtää is located between the tributaries of the river Kymijoki. Rocks are rapakivi. In the north of the municipality there are many different marshes that are part of the National park Valkmusa. The eastern part of the largest lake Tammijärvi is located in the south of Pyhtää. There are other small lakes, such are: Länsikylänjärvi, Huutjärvi), Kärsäjärvi and Teutjärvi.

• VIROLAHTI (Swedish: Vederlax), the municipality/countryside:
- Distance from the center Virolahti: to Helsinki 176 km (2 h 09 min.);
- Population of 3.535 people, 95,3% of Finns (3.361 people), 0.5% Swedes (17 people), 4.2% other (152 people inc. 132 are citizens of other countries);
- Transportation: bus;
- Municipal tax 20%;
- Nature: water in the land (lakes, ponds, rivers) 4,27 km², the sea 182.71 km².
Two Rivers Virojoki and Vaalimaanjoki fall into the Gulf of Finland on the Russian side.
